Magasin is a cultural initiative in Vienna. At its peak of growth, it
is shut down for reasons of space ownership. It has a month left. Even
tough its body is subject to death, its very spirit could escape in a
media enriched expression, that collects its strenght from the space itself,
and envisions its future, interconnected network of digitally enhanced
localities. It shows it being connected, even if the other sides are missing
now and have to be evnisioned.
We plan to install an architectural device that saves the spirit oif the magasin project and helps to ignite its reincarnation. Its would be fuelled by memories of magasins guest, showing that magasin is not a space nor a property, but a network of connected experiences, memories and expectations. We wish to give an architectural shape to this entity(mental data)?, that is not dependent on physical property yet it embodies magasin.
The architectural device was on show in the old space on the 25th of
February, along with interactuve installaiton by Shiftz.at.
A computer projector is placed in an old cellar on a tripod, with handels
so one can rotate it around horizontally. It projects "enhanced"
geomerty of the space itslef, like digital lines on physical edges, etc,
plus memories of people that used that space before. We have collected
these memories online, on a related
discussion forum.
But the projection stays static on the walls even if you rotate the projector. a hidden mouse is tracking the rotation, so the computer is panning the projected image.
It feels like a magic lamp, (torch) that uncovers a hidden layer of media beneath the walls, memories of the walls.
The visitors could enter their memories on the show using an old PC as a terminal. This data was recieved and processed - projected by the installation. Here is the database that grew on the show:

hoehen der abende die das engagement entlohnten.

The memories and virtual shadows.
The main effect that gives the notion of the magic torch - media stays
static on the walls while projector turns.
The projection was partly picked up by installed fabrics.
The interaction point, a digital projector that can be turned around and
had some switches on its handles. Image for testing distortions.
Some of the initial and envisioned possibilities - enhancing the existing
space in its materiality with the media.
